We love this machine in our office. It makes a smooth cup of coffee. You can make an americano or a latte. It’s easy to descale as well. I have recommended this machine to friends for home and they love it as well.

I have had quite a few espresso machines over the years. I have assembled large commercial machines and used simple Vietnameese fins. I paid full price for this new machine. My last machine was a Gamea Revo and I got almost 20K cups of coffee out of it before it started to fall apart. I was on the fence between ordering the DeLonghi Evo or the Start. The Evo has been around for a while and is more expensive. But it is on sale for half price. The Start is a new machine that is slightly more than the Evo sale price. It has less buttons and bells and whistles. But it has several distinct advantages. First it comes with a 2 year warranty which can be extended to 3 years just by registering the machine. So no need to purchase an extended warranty. I did not opt for the automatic milk frother because my wife and I drink our coffees black. This machine was easy to setup and required only a few test cups to get the brew right. The grinder was set up perfect to begin with. I also programned the buttons for my preferences including strongest coffee setting. Once set it makes consistent great coffee. The crema is about .5 inches. The coffee comes out hot. There is an auto off feature which you can set from 15 min to 3 hours. My last fancy machine had all kinds of programming but no auto off. It is very valuable to save the life of your boiler. It holds lots of beans (1/4 pound) but not too much water (5-6 cups) but is easy to refill the water without removing the water tank entirely. There are visual warnings as well as beeps for any problems (like water low, beans low, tray missing, etc.) but not constant beeping just one beep and a red pictograph of the problem. So, I am very happy with the machine. My wife gets up at 4am and has her coffee before leaving for work. This machine does not have auto on but starts up in less than one minute (if you turn off the energy saving option). She is very happy with this simple to operate esperesso machine that makes great coffe or Americano. The design is excellent with less to go wrong. It is narrow but just as deep and tall as most macines. So it takes up less linear counter space. I hope it lasts as long as my last machine. An update after 3 months of daily use. We make at least 4 large cups of coffee per day. Usually more. Plus the occaisional Americano or Espresso. This machine has performed superbly. I use filtered akaline water which reduces the need for descaling. The descale icon comes up after 2 months of daily use. The engineering that went into this machine is really someting. The brew group is simplified and easier to clean. It has much less moving parts than the traditional brew groups. I am very impressed. The only negatives so far are: 1) If it runs out of water in the middle of a brewing cycle it does not resumme after you add water. It goes back to beginning and you have to manually add water to a half brewed cup of coffee. 2) The dark tint of the water tank makes it difficult to see the water level. Both of these are minor annoyances. But the ease of operation and consistancy of great coffee far outweigh these.

Took about 30 minutes to set up and get the settings right for my beans. Makes an incredible cup of coffee. I’ve been using it multiple times per day since I got it. Everything works well.

Every day I have a perfect coffee or cappuccino with fresh ground beans. It’s so easy and delicious! I have been using this for almost 3 months now and have not had any issues with machine. I am completely satisfied with it.

To use pre-ground coffee, you need to make one vup at a time, and never put the coffee before the option for pre-ground is activated if not, it will stop working and you need to clean the coffee deposit and start again. Also if you use very fine geounded coffee it might not work. The only thing I didn’t like is that the water filter used didn’t even register on the machine. I put it as the instructions said, but I can’t know when to change it becaue the system didn’t recognise it ( even though it came in the box)

We had our De’Longhi Magnifica Start for six weeks now. It is a great espresso maker for someone who does not like to spend a lot of time preparing their espresso or Americano in the morning. And it does well 98% of the time, making a great cup of coffee or espresso with very little preparation or clean up.In the first days, the magnifico start did create a little aggravation, until we adjusted the settings to our taste, beans, etc. Once we had it set properly and figured out the operation, the De’Longhi Magnifica Start performed very well. One minor downfall for us Is the espresso maker will abort the making of your drink if anything goes wrong and well clean itself. So if you run out of beans partway, it will ditch the partial quantity of freshly ground beans. It does monitor the water capacity and will not start unless sufficient water is available.Though there is a version with an automatic milk frother, this version does not have this feature and the steaming frother wand is okay, but a bit disappointing for the two steps of disassembly for cleaning it takes after use. We tend to use a manual frother separately. It does shut off automatically after 30 minutes and reminds you to empty its waste bin every few days if you have not done so. The De’Longhi Magnifica Start makes enjoying a good cup of coffee/espresso at home very convenient!

(Update – 5/2/2024) – Around 5 weeks into use, the machine’s descaling light came on. This represents about 100 drinks, which I thought was early. It’s concerning to me if this will be the normal frequency the machine will need to be descaled. The descaling operation performed exacting as described in the Owner’s Manual. You’ll want to catch the liquids in a container with at least a 5″ lip, or there will be splatter. The process did take around 30 minutes.————————————I admit, I was intrigued when I first saw this espresso machine. I’ve been making my own using manual machines for over 15 years, I gave it a try, nevertheless. Here’s what I like: – The process to make shots, coffee or Americano is fully automated. Add water to the reservoir, beans to the coffer, plug it in and push a button – espresso. – Out of the box, I found the espresso to be rich, and close to perfect. There are several adjustments that can be made (grind granularity, size of the shots, and espresso strength) to tailor the taste. – Since the beans are always ground just before brewing, the look and taste of the espresso is always fresh. – There’s a lot of room where the shots are produced. If you’re a traditionalist, you can lower the espresso nozzles and place your shots into shot glasses. Or raise the nozzles, and just place your mug on the tray, and shoot them directly into a cup. – Espresso, coffee and Americano are all just push-button selections with right amounts of water and espresso created for each drink. – During operation, the machine sounds solid and efficient. – If you want to try some preground coffee, there is a portal for adding a scoop for just brewing that. Nice if someone needs a decaf, or maybe just a French Roast… – Most of the tedious tasks requiring cleaning with a manual machine are taken care of until the end of the session. Spent grounds are dumped into a bin that’s easily removed for emptying and cleaning. Water is regularly circulated through the nozzles to help keep them clean. The machine will track whether or not you’re actually cleaning it – if you haven’t dumped grounds in 3 days, it will light an indicator, and not function until they’ve been dumped. If the grounds bin fills up before then, the indicator will be lighted, requiring them to be dumped. – While frothing is performed manually, a button initiates the steaming wand. When the wand is ready, the steaming light will flash. Flip the steam lever down to start frothing. After about a minute, steam will cease. With regular milk, frothing is barely adequate. I froth 8 ounces of non-fat for a double-shot latte. The milk is warmed, but I think there is too much foam on top. I can clean it up with a hand frother, but just using the machine I’d say it’s better for a cappuccino than a latte. Using plant-based milk, in this case oat milk, it froths about the same, but has more air and is a bit runny. Again, a hand frother can clean it up. The steaming wand doesn’t need to be purged of water first, when the lever is flipped to provide the steam, only steam comes out. More on frothing below… – Flipping the frothing lever without pushing the frothing button produces hot water. This can be used to rinse the wand, or provide hot water for a cup of tea. – The User Manual and Quick Start Guide are very useful. Go through them to get set up initially, and then again later to tweak to your taste. – A bottle of descaling solution is provided for descaling the machine. A water test strip is provided to test your water for hardness. You use the results of this test to set the machine for its descaling interval. When descaling is required, I light will light up for notification. There is a complete descaling cycle that the machine runs to remove deposits. – An optional (not provided with my machine) filter can be placed into the water reservoir to filter and soften the water. I use water already filtered from my refrigerator, and don’t feel a need to use this one. But if you have hard water, this would be a good option for you. – There are lights to indcate any of the normal issues you might encounter (out of beans, out of water, grounds bin full, and others) so you don’t have to pay close attention. If something unexpected happens, the machine will display indications for that also, and the book has clear instructions to address most of the potential problems. – While the machine is a bit pricy, you won’t need to buy a bean grinder with storage, tamping mat and distributor/tamper. – There is a two-year warranty. In my experience, this should be plenty of time for any reliability issues to surface. For me, I produce 2 to 3 espresso drinks a day, so around 1,000 drinks per year. If I encounter any issues, I’ll update this review. Some comments… – The machine is large. The trade-off is a decent water reservoir, the bin for spent grounds, and enough capacity in the front tray for some cleaning cycles. – My biggest complaint is the machine’s frothing ability. I like grande lattes – 2 shots with 8 ounces of well-frothed non-fat milk. According to the provided manual, the machine is designed to froth only for cappuccino – around 3½ ounces. It will mostly froth my 8 ounces and get it to a temperature that is suitable (136°), but I need to use a hand-frother to finish the job. I don’t mind, but extending the length of time the steaming wand provides steam is one of the things that can’t be changed. To work around this limitation, I turn the frother off at the end of the first cycle and then back on. With a machine that has this much flexibility – this seems hokey. – The area where you add water is around 1½ inches square – you’ll want to use something with a good spout. The tank is easily removable if you want to use a faucet. It does have a generous capacity of 60 ounces and the level is easily viewable during operation. – The only dishwasher safe components are the plastic pieces of the front tray and the steaming wand cover and nozzle. The metal grid for the front tray, the water reservoir and the grounds bin should be handwashed when necessary. Usually, a rinsing is sufficient. – Operation of the machine, while pretty easy is a bit intimidating at first with all of the options. Don’t be afraid to experiment. I think the sweet spot for this machine is for people who are serious about their espresso, but still haven’t gotten their own machine yet. This machine makes it easy, and still provides some serious taste. I think the weakest link is the manual frother, but an inexpensive hand frother can easily solve that problem. Everything else comes in the machine. Clean-up is easier also since there is no tamping, distributing or emptying a portafilter – it’s all done in the machine! Enjoy!

The two issues I had was :1: it keeps randomly spitting hot water into the milk instead of steam when I try to froth. Sometimes it is steam, sometimes it is water instead. Wasted a lot of milk. 2: extremely annoying that filter was NOT included. Instructions say use the included filter, but there was none. Im sorry when one buys a new machine, one is not expecting to order parts separately to start using it!! 3: it looked like it had been opened and repacked /returned before I received it. Not worn down or used for years but obviously repackaged and grinder had coffee pcs. I wondered if the water spitting issue caused someone to return. It does make great espresso and coffee and is very easy to use, not complicated and it is a good looking machine. For me though, not reliably frothing milk is a dealbreaker and I disliked a lot that it had been somewhere before.

We have seen on our trip to Italy such a machine and loved the quality of the coffee and the reliability of the machine. So decided to buy one upon our return to USA. Luckily we found a similar model and moreover, built in Europe (Romania). It works great, my wife figured it out easily and we enjoy great capucino, espresso and Americano!Highly recommend! Does not take too much space and it’s easy to maintain.

Learning curve is steep when I initially got it and started using it. But once I read thick manual carefully and follow instructions, making home Expresso becomes so easy. It is not small, so I placed it on top of my Water vending machine. It is not the best place but works for me so far.Water tank is on the right side and refilling water is pretty easy. Used to stop by Starbucks all the time, and now, I could make it home with the beans of my choice.Truly one of the best Expresso machines I’ve used by far. 5 stars.

Ooof I waited a bit to write this review so I could be as honest as possible. First, let’s start with packaging, 3 boxes worth was overkill to me, no big deal though. I unboxed this baby and I was PUMPED to set it up. I live in the PNW and I am a former barista myself, so coffee is in my DNA. I have owned a variety of espresso machines and I am very well versed in them as well as the maintenance and inner workings. This machine is GORGEOUS. All the bells and whistles while allowing me to create my own beautiful lattes. WELL…… Upon starting, this machine made some AWFUL noise when attempting to grind the beans for my initial brews. I cleaned the grinder out and restarted-happened again. After a 3rd attempt, I started to break the machine down-some of the screws require a key (similar to a hubcap wheel lock). Unable to fully break this machine down I did the best I could only to discover a huge chunk of what I thought was metal lodged in the burr grinder. I was able to finally pull it out, finding it was a chunk of plastic. Imagine my shock. THEN, the machine got stuck on the dreaded descale loop. This is a notorious issue with De’Longhi Magnifica machines. After about THREE HOURS, I was able to finally test this machine out properly. The good-the coffee is consistent and beautiful every time. It is highly customizable-flavor, temperature, power off setting. The craftsmanship is gorgeous, this is a beautiful machine! The ugly-what was that setup!? For an almost 700.00 machine, I expect this to operate smoothly and not have defects in it requiring physical maintenance BEFORE use. WOW. The steam wand moves side to side without on option to move forward and backward, would be a nice feature.BIGGEST PET PEEVE-that AWFUL floater design. The water reservoir is sleek… meaning it is narrow. There is a floater inside on the bottom of the side that has what LOOKS like a locking cap but it just sits there willy nilly. Almost every time I fill my reservoir this pops off. Again, for almost 700.00 this is a ridiculous inconvenience for me to have to wedge my hand or a chopstick in there to hold it down. That has me cursing this machine weekly. With all that said, I am enjoying my coffee daily still. Would I buy it again-ehhhhh I’m on the fence. There’s a few design flaws I think would push me in another direction at this price point. If those items don’t bother you, this is a beast of a machine and will certainly be enjoyed.

This is a great espresso machine. It takes some learning to get it just right but that’s expected. Set up was incredibly easy. Makes a great espresso. It looks scary and complicated but if you follow the easy to read instructions, it’s pretty easy. It does fit under my cabinets on my counter, however, I do have to pull it out to add beans for grinding. It’s heavy so if you have to do that, be prepared. It didn’t come with a damper so you will have to get one but that’s minor. It’s a really great machine and I’m really happy with it.

this was an upgrade for us from a entry level espresso machine and is a great improvement. we love that it grinds and packs the beans for you, has a variety of sizes to be poured and can use ground coffee as well. the coffee is smooth and consistent, it’s been great and was quick and easy to set up.

Offre beaucoup de possibilités et de sortes de café. Mon mari était ravi de son cadeau de Noël. Par contre il manque le filtre dans ce modèle et il faut aussi penser à acheter la cruche à lait

I am not a religious coffee drinker, but I love a good espresso or latte every now and then; typically, after a big meal. It was always a treat for me to go to the local coffee house and get what I wanted. My only other coffee making device is a drip machine we got for our wedding decades ago. And I only get it out for dinner parties or when guests visit. Converting to an espresso machine seemed like an overreaching splurge.I am glad I took the leap.Getting to know how to use this machine intimidated me at first. I got a barista friend to show me to walk me through the very simple process, I was embarrassed by how easy it really is. We got this machine just before we had our annual Easter dinner and it was a hit, of course. The drinks out of this machine are as good as any I have paid too much for.Not having used other espresso machines, I can’t speak to how the machine compares to others. I can say that I find this one to be very manageable. The process is simple and the machine tells you exactly what it wants or needs to work. I keep the instructions close by to remind me what the symbols mean. In time, I am sure that I will not need to refer to it as much. I like that there is the option of using beans or pre-ground coffee to make a regular drip cup. The parts are easily moveable and washable, if necessary.I still only drink an espresso drink occasionally, but it is so satisfying to be able to make it myself. Friends are visiting more and lingering longer since we got this machine. This investment will pay for itself in little time for me.Very worth it.

The 67 page instruction manual includes multiple languages. This is a robust espresso machine. It’s way more complicated than I am use to as I am upgrading from my simple French press life to full blown coffee bar. This will take me a bit to master. The quality of this machine is top notch. I love that it grinds the beans and has the full process needed to complete a variety of coffee beverages. At $649, this is on the higher end scale and the quality matches. This would make a fantastic gift.

This is a the perfect little machine if you want something that brews and tastes better than a keurig and straddles the line between with less work than say a breville barista express. It only makes espresso, straight black coffee, and americanos which is perfect for me as those are really all we drink in our household. It also takes up a lot less counter space than our breville barista express and eliminates the need for all of the other additional accessories like a portafilter, tamper, knockbox, etc. Being automatic really saves so much time either making coffee at home or picking one up at a coffee shop and it also means a lot less clean up in the area versus a manual machine.

  24. Liz

I bought this machine to replace my previous Delongi Magnifica machine that I owned for over 10 years. The old one failed because I didn’t follow the instructions and clean it as often as I should have. The fact that it lasted over 10 years is amazing. They’ve made some improvements to this version, including a better water spillage tank. The use of the buttons on the front is super easy. It’s also a lot quieter than my previous machine. I love the fact that I can buy good quality espresso beans, and the machine grinds them and tamps them and makes wonderful espresso with beautiful creama. I really don’t have to do anything other than descale it when it tells me to, and clean the infuser once per month. My old machine failed because I did not clean the infuser every month because it always seemed like it didn’t get dirty! I’m going to make sure I clean the infuser every month on the new one.

This is my first coffee machine. I just tried a few times on making coffee. It is pretty easy to use and powerful. The De’Longhi coffee machine combines convenience with coffee-making capabilities. Great design on the touch screen to make a selection. I like the manual milk frothing, which allows for making personalized foam. The machine’s compact size makes it suitable for kitchens of any size. However, I still feel it is little bit over pricy. Overall, it is still a great coffee machine.

I was a Starbucks Barista for 5+ yrs, and still drink a quad espresso daily. Since leaving Sbux (and losing the discount), I’ve used a Cusinart EM-200NP1 for the last 10 yrs. Wonderful machine, but is manual, requires a separate grinder, and doesn’t quite match the quality of the coffee shop. Amazon suggested this DeLonghi and with the Prime Day deal, decided to level up… HOMERUN!!! I’ve always known DeLonghi was a top tier brand, but never imagined a basic home machine could provide this level of quality with such ease. Out of the box, it was simple to prime and calibrate the grind, and within about 15 mintues, I was pulling quality shots worthy of any green apron! Perfect crema, smooth body.. and with the grinding/pod disposal all internal, the thing is a breeze! Given the ease of use, quality, and the savings of not paying coffee shop prices, this machine is worth it’s weight in gold! You get what you pay for, so spend the money!!

Wow! I love this machine SO much and it makes my mornings so much brighter!Things I most like about my De’Longhi Magnifica Start Automatic Espresso Machine:* It automatically grinds the beans…I love using freshly ground beans in my morning coffee, and this machine saves me time because it grinds them fresh for me.* Coffee tastes SO much more complex and has a thicker, creamier consistency due to the water being forced through the grounds with pressure. The crema on top of the drinks!!!!!* The milk frother is easy to use and now I can make my favorite coffee shop drinks (lattes!) at home AND they TASTE like they were made by a professional barista.* Programmable strength and temperature for each type of drink* Oh, and I need to mention again, the crema on top of every drink. So yummy.* The touchscreen is VERY easy to understand and use.Things I would change if I could, but still doesn’t make it a bad machine:* I wish the water tank held more water* Even though I have programmed the machine to make every drink the hottest it can be, I wish the drinks came out hotter.*The machine will stop in the middle of making a drink if the water tank is too low, it needs more beans, or if the grounds need to be emptied. I wish it would alert me to these things when I turn it on, not after I’ve already programmed it to make a drink and it’s already started.Overall though, I cannot say enough good things about this espresso maker. I love that I have the option to make an espresso, coffee, or an americano and that I can easily do this by touching a button. With the milk frother, I can also make lattes or cappachinos whenever I want. It’s great for when I have guests over and, it’s easy enough for guests to learn to use themselves too.

I have now used this machine for 4 months and overall very happy with its performance so far. Cleaning is not the easiest, especially the drip tray, but that is superseded by the time saving of making the espresso shots. When you’ve ended up the default family barista and grown tired of making 4 cappuccinos per morning with a manual machine (no matter how much you love that machine), it’s time to move into the auto world. I got the De’Longhi with the manual frothing so I can’t speak to the auto frothing, but the manual frother is plenty powerful to get a carafe frothed in like a minute and cleanup of the wand is fairly easy (I usually just wipe down between cappuccinos and full clean when all are done).I always do a double shot of espresso and top off the coffee mug with steamed milk and froth. The strength and depth of the espresso is not that of my manual machine with non-pressurized portafilter, but it’s not a giant step down. This unit comes with a complete manual and clear concise instructions which I appreciate. I can’t say how nice it is to be able to push a button and do other things while the espresso shots are being metered out.As mentioned earlier, the cleaning of the machine is probably my biggest complaint of the machine, which I do probably about once a week. It’s not a deal breaker by any stretch. I do recommend this machine.

The De’Longhi Magnifica Start was a great choice for my family of coffee lovers. It offers a variety of features, including a built-in grinder, one-touch controls for espresso, coffee, and latte, and a manual milk frother. The milk frother allows you to create cappuccinos, lattes, and other milky coffee drinks. The Magnifica Start is also easy to clean and maintain, removable and dishwasher-safe parts for easy clean up.Pros:- User-friendly and affordable- Built-in grinder- One-touch controls- Manual milk frother- Easy to clean and maintainCons:- Manual milk frother requires a bit more practice than an automatic frother- Limited number of one-touch recipes- Plastic construction feels less expensive than higher-end machinesThe De’Longhi Magnifica Start is a great option for coffee lovers who want a simple and convenient way to make espresso and other coffee drinks at home.

The best cappuccino maker ever! The initial use was a bit complicated! However, once I understood how to work this unit is now my best friend! The issues with leaking. A bit on the pricy end. However, it pays for its self in the long run. No more stops to expensive coffee places. Easy to clean! Very durable!

This machine is awesome! Quite large and a bit intimidating as I have never had an espresso machine before. The easy to read/easy to follow instructions made setting up and using it a breeze. I am enjoying cup after cup everyday now. It really is easy to use and clean, fits nicely on my counter, and you just know that the quality is there with this name brand.

Took about 30 minutes to set up and get the settings right for my beans. Makes an incredible cup of coffee. I’ve been using it multiple times per day since I got it. Everything works well.

I adore this machine. We went from a much simpler, cheaper model from the same brand to this one and I have no regrets whatsoever, it’s 100% worth the reduced counter space. Everything functions as you’d expect it to, I like that it has a built in grinder, and the self-cleaning functions seem to work great. My barista roommate couldn’t be happier.
